Preparing files for poster printing

For optimal output, set up your files in RGB at 240 ppi at the final output size. A typical output size is 24" x 36". For larger prints, please call us for details. All files should be flattened and saved as tiffs.

Monitor Calibration

We suggest that you calibrate your monitor. At the studio, we use the ColorVision Spyder device to calibrate all of our monitors. This insures that from digital capture to printed output, colors maintain their highest level of accuracy.

Why go digital? Some frequently asked questions...

Q: What is digital photography?
A: Digital photography is a 'filmless' process; a photograph is captured directly onto a computer's hard drive, where it can then be retouched and/or printed.

Q: What are the advantages of going digital?
A:
While film may be the first love of most professional photographers, more and more have come to embrace digital capture as well. Why? Because the quality of digital imaging has improved dramatically over the last several years. Digital capture also offers benefits over film: speed, flexibility, and cost savings.

With a digital camera you can view images quickly to make necessary adjustments. You'll see the results of those changes, and you'll know when you've captured the shot you want. Because this is filmless capture, there is no film processing time or cost.

Digital images can be retouched and manipulated on a computer(without losing a generation in quality).

Q: Is the quality of a digital photograph as good as that of conventional photography?
A: Yes. In some ways it is better. A truer gray balance can be obtained without the variations of film and its color shifts. The image captured can be sharper, since there is no film grain to enlarge.

Some inexpensive digital cameras offer only low resolution capabilities, suitable mostly for web usage and computer presentations. There are, however, more advanced digital capture devices on the market today.

S.J. Barao Photography uses the Jenoptik Eyelike digital system, which mounts onto a conventional 4x5 camera. It yields a very high resolution image. The Eyelike medium format capture back works with existing light and strobe lights and produces a live preview on the computer monitor. We also utilize Canon digital cameras in the studio and for location shooting.

Since we determine our resolution at the time of the shoot, it is best to advise us ahead of time, how large the image will be used. Once the image is captured at the appropriate resolution, re-sizing it larger, beyond 25%, may not give satisfactory results.
